The Story So Far

Era 1 (2012–2013): The Troubled Launch

The first two BPL seasons were dominated by Dhaka Gladiators. But the league was nearly killed in its infancy by a 2013 fixing scandal that resulted in lifetime bans for players and franchise officials. The Gladiators’ two titles are unrecognised.

The BCB suspended the tournament for the 2014 season to clean up.

Era 2 (2015–2018): The Comilla Dynasty Begins

BPL relaunched in 2015 with stricter franchise vetting. Comilla Victorians won that first reborn edition, kicking off what would become BPL’s most successful franchise.

2016 went to Dhaka Dynamites with star imports including Kumar Sangakkara. 2017–18 saw Rangpur Riders’ star-studded XI (McCullum, Gayle, Mashrafe) lift the trophy in arguably the BPL’s most famous final.

Era 3 (2019–2022): Comilla Dominance

Comilla won three consecutive BPL titles (2018-19, 2019, 2022). They became BPL’s first dynasty franchise. Mahmudullah’s leadership and a strong domestic core proved more durable than star-import-driven sides.

Era 4 (2023–2026): Tamim’s Barishal

Fortune Barishal won 2024 and 2025 back-to-back — the only franchise apart from Comilla to win consecutive titles. Tamim Iqbal’s leadership and a pragmatic mix of domestic + overseas players (David Miller, Kyle Mayers) defined the era.

Format Explained

  • Group stage: Single round-robin, each team plays all others twice (42 matches in a 7-team format)
  • Top 4 qualify for playoffs
  • Qualifier 1: #1 vs #2 (winner to final)
  • Eliminator: #3 vs #4 (loser eliminated)
  • Qualifier 2: Q1 loser vs Eliminator winner (winner to final)
  • Final: at Mirpur

Why BPL Matters Globally

1. Subcontinental Cricket Calendar

BPL plays in December–February, filling a slot between BBL (Australian summer) and PSL (February–March). For overseas players, BPL extends the franchise calendar.

2. Domestic Talent Showcase

Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Towhid Hridoy, Taskin Ahmed — all came of age in BPL before becoming Bangladesh national team mainstays.

3. Production Quality

BPL TV production has improved dramatically since 2018. Multi-camera coverage, Hawk-Eye, ball-tracking — all standard now.

Star Players Through the Years

  • Brendon McCullum — Rangpur Riders 2017–18 (PoT)
